Abstract The French Jewish Communities Records is the largest single collection on the history of French Jewry preserved in the western hemisphere. Most of the collection documents 200 years of French Jewish history, from the end of the eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century. In this period, French Jewry was legally emancipated and shed its traditionalism, becoming a largely urban, highly acculturated, community.
